Photon Pro App Reviews

This is ok, but it doesn’t do anywhere near what it calms.

For $29 to denoise video isn’t much, but for the limitation it has with certain lighting and conditions, it doesn’t really help the video as other applications that I see can do. I’m unhappy with the results. Oh and it doesn’t support 4k video, they forgot to mention that with in the description above.

Does the job but slows

The plugin does as described: it will clean up noisy footage and has saved some shots of mine. But gosh it slows down a session! My computer is no slouch either.

Quick and somewhat effective

I also own and use NEAT. When I compare the two, NEAT is superior by about 20%. Not bad, but not good enough for some. That said, Photo Pro is a useful tool. It just needs to be improved to compete. I think this version will work fine for non-professional video with a small amount of noise.

Nicely priced noise reduction

There are few usable plugins for noise reduction on FCPX, the best one I’ve found so far is NeatVideo, so that is what every newcomer is compared to. :) In direct comparison, Photon Pro does not look too bad. The controls are much simpler and the design is very much in an FCPX way. The results are pretty good, edges remain sharp and focused (even more so than in NeatVideo) and weird color blocking is kept to a minimum. Render times are okay (slightly faster than NeatVideo, which is painfully slow). The price is amazing, much cheaper than the direct competitor. The only problem I have with it is the complete lack of any help or instruction. Installation is weird but managable. But I basically had to guess what each slider means (which isn’t too hard). I am sure this will come in the future when the plugins gets more widely spread. Then I will gladly give my fifth star.

Does the job - but performance tends to kill final cut

Hi, I bought this filter yesterday and tried it on my 16gb macbookpro i7 2,5ghz. The results look good and much better than without the filter, BUT when it takes ages to render a 3 minute video. The big problem is that your computer just basically freezes when applying it to an object in final cut. All other apple effects enable you to go on with your editing and do their work in the background. BUT this filter takes all your CPU and you can’t go on working until the rendering is finished. And (like I said above) the rendering takes ages. It took me around THREE HOURS for 3 Minutes material. I hope that the developers reed this and find a solution for it. Its ok that it takes so long, but it is not ok that I cannot go on editing while the rendering takes place.

FCP X 10.1.4 crashed but thanks to a very fast support the problem has been solved

Just bought and installed and FCP X 10.1.4 crashed due to the Photon Pro plugin. A very fast and prompt support heled me to resolve the problem and now it works. It’s a great plugin and works very well. I tryed it with a movie shot in very, very dark situation with a canon eos 7d it did a great job.

Awesome!

I am using Photo Pro on foootage from low light situations, I am really pleased with the results.

Not sure about this app

I have to say. I was super excited but now I’m a little disappointed. I’m saying little because either I’m doing something wrong or this app isn’t developed enough? Crashed my FCPX and whole computer froze a couple of times. Never had this problem before installing this app. Hopefully there will be an update or fix but I’ll continue to mess around with different footages. Also wish there was more helpful information. I’m guessing that this only works well for low quality videos in low lit situations? I was trying to correct low lit footage from 5Dm2 Canon. Footage was compressed into Apple ProRes 422 LT, Linear PCM from Mpeg Streamclip software. Footage wasn’t at its worse situation with grain either. It was an ISO problem I thought this app would fix easily and quickly. When I tried correcting footage it started giving me bizarre colorful edges all over the place, even on flat colors like the walls. Then it started acting up trying to render and took me about 30 minutes to restart a couple of times and try to delete the effect from footage. As soon as I did, the computer started working normally again. Comp used on 15 inch Retina 16GB Raw 1600 MHz DDR3, 512GB SSD, OS X version 10.9.5, 2.7 GHz Intel Core i7, NVIDIA GeForce GT 650M 1024 MB graphics.

First Time Worked Very Well

I was so happy that this worked out. It took me a while to realize what tracking was. Funny, after we’ve been bombarded with all of these new technologies and products, the tracking was the same problem that we would have had with VCR tapes. Photon Pro worked for what I needed. I love it a millions times over….right now. If I happen upon any problems in the future, you’ll here it from me.

Using for low light gopro FCPX on new iMac

2.9 ghz intel core i5, NVIDIA GeForce GT 750M 1024MB This program is slowing my machine down to a slug pace. One crash so far, lot’s of freezes. The amount of correction I’m getting is no where NEAR worth the amount of time it takes to render. Can I get my money back? It’s my bad for having protune on in low lighting. So, I guess I’m paying for it in time and money. This is a dog.

Best Support Ever / Superior product

You may find a similar product, and mostly likely cost more, but you won’t find a customer service that will come even close. My recent experince with product and customer service is unmatched by any customer service in recent memory. The owner of this complany is committed to execellence and customer satistfaction. You won’t find product with its functionally or price anywhere. Must buy.

It’s Works but SLOOOOOW!

The video I’m rendering is only a 4:21 clip and it has taken over 45 minutes for this effect to be applied and it’s STILL NOT DONE RENDERING!!!! And I have a 2014 Retina Mac Book Pro 500GB/16 GB RAM! The app works but God forbid you have to apply it to a video longer than 5 minutes! Go grab breakfast and lunch and it MIGHT be finished rendering by dinner time. I don’t know how anyone could give this 5 stars?! If they improve the speed to that of the other apps for FCPX, I will change my rating. But until then, even at $29.00, it’s a waste of money!

Crashes constantly

This plugin causes FCPX to crash constantly. Their support page will tell you to repair disk permissions and reset preferences, but as soon as you load the plugin again, it’ll crash FCPX again. $30 sounded like a bargain, but I’d rather pay $200 for something that works.

Works well, but slow

This plugin works really well, can improve video noise a lot and the results are very pleasing. However it is slow, very slow. I use multicam a lot and usually apply effects and color correction to each angle to get each camera’s video to look “just right” before starting the editing process. However enabling this plugin before doing the edit is unusable as it is incredibly slow. You cannot realistically do any editing with this effect enabled. I found that it was best to apply the denoise as the very last step before exporting the final project (I export as master file 1080p then use Compressor to create the final mp4/mov). To give you a sense of what I mean by slow… an ~8 minute 1080p30 project will export master file in about 2-3 minutes without this effect enabled. With the effect enabled between 90 and 120 minutes depending on settings. That is just exporting master file so no compression taking place. I am sure it would be faster if I only needed to denoise a short segment, but as the entire 8 minutes was indoor video I wanted to do the lot. I observed that during export there is little multithreading going on and the plugin seems to use the graphics co-processor. I wonder if it could be improved by using more of the i7 CPU as well as the GPU as the CPU usage was never above 25%… exporting without the plugin enabled and FCP X would utilize 75% or more of the CPU. This is on a late 2013 iMac, 3.5Ghz i7, 24GB ram, GeForce GTX 780M with 4GB and a 1TB SSD flash drive… as fast a iMac as you can get. I rate it 4 stars because it works and does its job well, you just need to be patient when it comes time to render or export.

Not even close to Neat Video

I requested a refund ASAP. The other one I tried was PRODenoise and it was even worse. Just do yourself a favor and spend the money on the Neat one.

Fast, quick, efficient - Highly Recommend!

Works great, renders fast. (iMac 5K). Don’t know what the complaints are about, don’t listen to them. (Get a new computer! ;) Affordable product (compared to competition), and easy, quick, efficient sliders/customization to reduce noise, and get on with the edit.

Slow Rendering

If I set all the adjustment settings all the way to the right, it’d take about 5-10 mins to render for a 7 second clip. The Repair Disk Permission helped a little bit but still I could only use the plugin to a mid-range level. Otherwise it’d take too long to render.

Slow and crashes

Installs easily and works like other plug-ins. Unfortunately, it occasionally crashes FCP X on a fast iMac running Yosemite. Even when it runs it bogs down rendering, exporting (by a factor of 10 or more) and the general system. Needs work.

Slow, buggy, crashed, complicated

1. Installation was easy, then it slowed down the system dramatically in FCPX. 2. Fine tuning the settings & FCPX crashed. 3. Troubleshooting process was very, very complicated. 4. FCPX preferences were reset & project was gone. 5. Tried Neat Video demo: faster & better even with easy auto. The worse thing is this plugin can’t be returned. The developer, registered company & address seems shady. Save yourself some money; don’t buy this product.

Shocking

Literally had no impact whatsoever on my video no matter what settings are used, tried all kinds of things, no luck. Neat Video worked perfectly however, shame it’s more expensive but at least they’re providing working software. I am unbelievably bemused, never really had such a ridiculously bad experience with an app store purchase. Frustrating.
